This bird was "discovered" in the Southern African region after Etienne Marais circulated photos taken on his Caprivi trip in 2014. People then frantically started going through photos of odd buzzards taken on past trips, and several records were unearthed, the furthest back from 2001 in the Kgalagadi, which at the time was put down to a lost Forest Buzzard in the wrong habitat.

With a deluge of rarities starting to appear while I was still in Mozambique mid December 2016, I was very glad this one decided to stick around in Still Bay until I could get there.
